Now that Jax is a little older and has completed his round of vaccinations, we are out and about more.
As a “dos” doodle family once again, the most popular question we’re asked centers around their appearance.
People are intrigued with how different they look and the various coat types of the Goldendoodle…
Like any cross-breed, the appearance of these dogs vary from pup to pup.
For now I’d like to talk about the F1 (first generation) Goldendoodle. This is the offspring of a purebred golden retriever and a purebred poodle. #HarleyandJax
There are three main coat types.
- The straight coat – which is flat and resembles more of a golden retriever coat.
- The wavy coat – a mixture of a poodles curls, and a golden retriever’s straighter coat.
- The curly coat – which tends to look more like the poodle coat
The color of their coat is also a familiar question when meeting new people. #lotsofcolor
Common coat colors can include white, cream, apricot, gold, red, and sometimes gray and black (also called phantom).
The older Jax gets, the whiter his new growth becomes, yet I have no clue what’s going on with his ears…
I make people laugh out loud when I share my intellectual response on the whole variety of different coat types. I just tell them –
Goldendoodles are like a box of chocolates, I never know what I’m gonna get.
There’s oodles and doodles of information about the various coat types of the Goldendoodle. For this post I referenced Wikipedia
Speaking of coats – If you are a doodle pet parent and struggle with finding the right groomer for your pup, here’s an excellent FREE professional doodle grooming guide from The International Doodle Owners Group, Inc. (IDOG). They’re a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) group of volunteers, dedicated to the protection of Labradoodles and Goldendoodles. #wonderfulresource
Have a great weekend, do something spectacular, and we’ll catch up next week 🙂

Hooray for doodle coats!!! You know my Dash and Lilly are similar to your Jax and Harley. Many times people think Dash is a poodle and Lilly is some type of golden something!! What’s funny is that both are labradoodles. I love their coats. In fact, today they are getting groomed. Hooray!!! It took me a while to find the right groomer who could do well with the doodle look. Will post “after” shots tonight. Hope all is well in Doodleville East. We are hanging in out here in the West!

Deirdre, I’m waiting to see if or when Jax’s ears lighten up. It’s a great deal of fun watching the transitions of the coat changes…

We learn something new everyday Those furs are so soft and fluffy

Learning is a wonderful thing isn’t it? You’ve taught us plenty Two french bulldogs! Have a great weekend!

We have a lot of doodle friends. Some look like my purebred poodles and some don’t look anything like a Poodle. I like your box of chocolate explanation.
June 12, 2015
Thanks Jan, the box of chocolate theory works for me too! Can’t wait to see what Jax’s adult look turns out to be.
June 12, 2015
Since golden retrievers can come in so many different shades, it makes perfect sense to me that goldendoodles would as well. Your boys both have gorgeous coats, and it will be fun to see how Jax changes over time!

I agree with you JanK. Coloring however for my two seem to have no rhyme or reason. I’ll discuss color in a few weeks, but Harley’s Poodle Poppa was copper red. Where all the white came from remains a mystery. Have a great weekend!

Oodles of cuteness in those fur-babies! Wishing you all a terrific weekend. 🙂

Thanks Monika – same to you, do something spectacular 🙂

Well, if you follow me on instagram or facebook, you know how much I have faded and so has Bailie. Mother nature is the only one who knows what Jax will look like when he is a year old! Take lots of photos, Mom says, as you won’t see the changes as much seeing him day in, day out. People used to tell Mom I was fading but she didn’t believe it until she looked at early days photos and then she was shocked!
June 12, 2015
Emma, let’s find a different word than fading. It’s too sad – and I never think about sad when I thing about you! How about “changing.” I do know what your mom is talking about, I can see it when I scroll through my photos on the computer. Why do you all have to grow up so fast? How can we slow you down?
June 12, 2015
My friend’s dogs both tend towards the wavy coat. A groomer thought Mr. N might have poodle in him but nope, his coat is just wavy when it grows out.
June 12, 2015
Mr. N. has a movie star coat. It’s so silky and soft looking. I love it!

People still don’t believe me that Myles is a golden. We also rescued another doodle, Nala, but her coat is so flat, no beard, black that it has me second guessing. I think she is flat coat retriever and poodle though (see second guessing). I think I might just do a dna test on her to put the issue to rest. It is true about the box of chocolates because you don’t know what you will get; all of Myles siblings had really curly/wavy coats except him.
June 12, 2015
I remember when I first met you and Myles, I was so curious, I had never seen a straight haired goldendoodle before. I love the variations and individuality. Can’t wait to see how Jax ends up! Hugs to the girls for me!

Great post – I’ve noticed as Jax is getting older how different he looks from Harley – Leo looked much more like him. Not that Jax isn’t gorgeous, he is, it’s just interesting and fun – the variations.
June 12, 2015
I know what you mean Slim, just stay with us, because Jax keeps changing daily! Their coat will change 3X’s before their first birthday. I love the individuality of this breed. Have a great weekend

Interesting about the different colors and textures of their coats. They’re both so handsome, but maybe because I grew up during Farrah Fawcett’s heighth of popularity, I jsut love Jax’s flowing locks!
June 13, 2015
LOL – Jackie you are too much! I just got a visual of Jax in one of those Charlie Angels commercials 🙂 This vision will stick with me for the rest of the day I’m sure. Harley’s coat is so unique and incredibly easy to manage, people always mistake him for a giant Bichon – all the time.
June 18, 2015
I was wondering about this actually. I wonder how Jax’s coat will turn out when he grows up. I saw a picture you posted of him somewhere where he was all wet and thought his furs looked like cute little wet noodles 🙂 Oh and also, I saw a puppy at the store the other day that reminded me of him. I think it might have been a doodle but not completely sure.
June 19, 2015
Breeders say that a Doodle’s coat will change 3X before he reaches a year old. I don’t seem to remember all three changes with Harley but I do remember two with Leo. I’m somewhat fascinated to watch Jax and see what happens.

I would like to post a pic of my pup for readers to predict his adult coat texture. I’m hoping that it is wavy. Is there any way to know early on?
January 23, 2016
Hi Victor – While there are no guarantees in pin pointing exactly what his adult coat will look like, there are ways to come close. First – how old is your puppy? Reason I ask is because a Goldendoodle will experience (usually) three significant coat changes before reaching a year old. What type of Goldendoodle is he (F1, F1B, etc…)? the cross breeding generations will have a huge impact on the hair type. Are you ablate contact the person who has the parents? Hope these questions helped you a little bit – please feel free to email me through my contact page if you have additional questions. Thanks for stopping by.

I have a 4 month old golden golden doodle. We are super curious about how his coat will turn out. He has kinky kinky hair in his “arm pit/leg pit” areas and the base behind his ears. some of his hair around his neck is starting to grow in kinky at the base of the hair but the ends are straighter. He also isn’t crazy fluffy like some pictures I have seen of other doods. His body is more wavy but still too short to determine if its going to get wavier or straighter. Any ideas?
