DOGS AND TRASH

What is it with dogs and trash?

In our house, there’s only one trash that has a mysterious “hold” on Jaxson – the one in my office…

DSCN5416

I can’t see to figure it out considering the only items that are ever in there are –

  • newspapers
  • envelopes / mail
  • printing paper

I don’t eat in my office, yet he’s always got his head in it.

When he snags a piece of paper – he tears it to shreds in minutes. #magiciandoodle

On this particular day, I decided to redirect this behavior.

When he pulled the paper out, I stopped what I was doing and had a long discussion with him.

I am proud to say, he listened intently…

DSCN5320

For almost 15 minutes he sat near the paper. He knew touching it was out of the question, so he settled for remaining near it instead.

For 15 minutes he just sat. #yesItimedhim

On minute 16, I heard him sigh, and I just knew he was preparing to snatch and run. #notonmywatch

I whipped around in my swivel chair so fast I hurt my neck. But he faked me out…

DSCN5321

Taking a nap my eye!

I swear I think he was lying there with a smirk on his face. #smartaleckdoodle

The paper stayed on that rug for the rest of the afternoon.

But no real victory.

Yesterday he was back in the trash can. #wheresmywine

LET’S TALK DIFFERENT TRASH –

By the time you read this, the Boys will have only hours left of this Elite 8 round against the 2015 reigning champs of Port St. Joe, FL. in the Go Pet Friendly “Best City for Pet Travelers” tournament.

The way you rose to the occasion with voting, sharing, tweeting, and friendly trash talking has been simply outstanding!

Our friends over at Something Wagging this Way Comes – said it best –

You see, Port St. Joe won as 2015’s Best City For Pet Travelers. Despite having a population of less than 4000 and little going on except for some waterfront dives and a pet friendly beach.

Charleston’s super pet friendly – in AND out of the water!

Harley adds in addition to –

  • 40 pet friendly restaurants
  • 34 pet friendly attractions
  •  3  pet friendly beaches

Charleston’s got the best sticks ever!…

The only trash we have out is in the office, but it is boring trash. Just last fall, at the tender age of 9 I started to get into Gramma’s bedroom trash can when we visit. Now she has to put it away when I’m coming to visit. Mom says I’m too old for such nonsense, but I don’t agree.

Tell your mom – trash is just not something one grows too old for…. But I hope Jaxson does!

    I guess everyone needs a hobby. 🙂

Hope Jaxson likes my trash as much as he likes yours.

At least it’s only one trash can. Lulu never met a garbage can she didn’t like. lol!

So far Christie, there is no interest in the kitchen trash. It’s taller and has that pedal lid on it, and he hasn’t figured out how to open that one #yet

Yet again, I feel your pain! Of course Wrigley has never once gotten into the trash, and I am betting that Harley hasn’t either. Piper, on the other hand, has an affinity for the small little can (which looks just like yours) in our bathroom. She loves to pull out tissues and shred them faster than you can imagine. We’ve also had “the talk” multiple times and she makes the guiltiest little “I’m sorry” face… and then does it again a few days later. Please let me know if you find a permanent solution!

    • Cathy Bennett
      March 31, 2016

I have conceded Amanda – I’ve placed my trash can on top of my printer LOL I am going to Staples over the weekend and find a small one with a lid. I am plum out of answers. How’s your crew doing these days?

Jax is one smart pup! He knew just how to play the situation with the paper. So funny! My cats like to play with papers from the trash too. 🙂

You think that’s what it is? Harley loves when I come into my office – he associates it as nap time, jumps up on the love seat and gets his sleep on! Wish Jax did the same thing.

  • Elaine
    March 30, 2016

Is Jaxson trying to tell you to buy a shredder machine, lol? I had a reader tell me the other day that she sprayed a little vinegar on her bathroom trash (her dog loved eating tissues) and he hasn’t gone hear it since.

Haley, she’s more of a kitchen dumpster diver, haha!

    • Cathy Bennett
      March 31, 2016

While that sounds like a nifty, safe and inexpensive way to solve a problem – I am not a fan of the smell. Right now I have my trash can on top of the printer. #ornament But I am looking for a cute one with a lid. Going to Staples over the weekend!

  • Jackie Bouchard
    March 30, 2016

Luckily Rita is never interested in the trash. But our last dog loved to shred paper. It came in handy – i’d hand her the junk mail that we got every day, and she’d happily shred it for me. Miss that crazy girl.

Love the smirking, fake-napping shot. What a sneakster.

    Voted and tweeted!

Sheba and Luke are both trash pickers. All trash cans in our house either have lids or are in cabinets. Luke has a thing for tissues and I have bad sinuses so it would be an unending battle! However, I do leave the trash in my office out, but never throw food trash or tissues in there. Paper doesn’t seem to do it for them like it does for Jaxson!

I love that term JanK “trash pickers” #toofunny Jaxson’s love for paper is so odd, but then….

Maybe he fancies himself a postal inspector… Keeping you safe from nefarious mail! If it makes you feel better, Popoki cat does this, too. But she does it because she likes to lick paper, especially that slick stuff they use for receipts. Yes, she’s weird.

  • The Daily Pip
    March 30, 2016

I was laughing before I even started reading this post. Yes, dogs do have a weird fascination with trash. Our former dog, Pip, a 10 pound Yorkie had such an obsession with trash that we actually had to install a child safety lock to keep him out of cabinet where the kitchen trash was kept. He couldn’t jump on the couch without assistance, but somehow he turned into super dog when it came to trash

The tricks our dogs seem to be able to perform amaze me. I just wish one of them could benefit me, like pour me a glass of wine LOL

While I could agree with you Kari, there are also many other things Leo could be munching on that are much worse LOL Leo is such a regal looking dog, I love his photos!

I love the Napping pic – what a sweet munchkin taking a big snooze! So very cute! Shermie likes to stick his head in the trash – I have to put the small cans up from their reach. So naughty!

      March 31, 2016

I’m looking for the right can with a lid for my office, I can’t take it anymore. Presently I’ve got the can sitting on top of my printer. LOL Jaxson is so special 🙂

Such beautiful photos! Your red rug with the white swirls looks so beautiful with Jaxson. Trash is tempting to many…..humans and other species are drawn to all sorts of things…..

      April 4, 2016

Jasmine, can I tell you – I HATE THAT RUG! It used to be in my husbands office but when we moved I somehow inherited it. With two white dogs, it really shows up the hair (even thought it’s minimal) and makes me vacuum more than I’d care to. Perhaps that’s why he gave it to me LOL

  • Callie, Shadow, and Ducky's Mom
    April 3, 2016

Still catching up on my blog reading. Seems I’m ALWAYS catching up!

My Callie was a “trash picker” – just like Jan’s Sheba. I swear they are linked cosmically somehow! – Shadow and Ducky are more interested in balls and toys. All my trash cans – except in my office – used to have lids, but the one on the bathroom can split about a year ago and I never bothered replacing it. But somehow the house hasn’t been the same without the trash laying around.

      April 4, 2016

Girl – I’m so far behind, I don’t even know where to begin!!!! But you made me chuckle this morning with that phrase “trash picker” #loveit I never got to the store this weekend to get my new trash can so it’s still decorating the top of my printer as I type. This tournament has me tied to my chair these days. LOL
