If your pet had thumbs what would he/she do? Strange question – I totally agree, but what was also strange was finding out Tuesday March 3rd was “If Your Pet Had Thumbs Day”…
FICTITIOUS HOLIDAY?
Yes, but when I saw it, I found myself wondering just what WOULD Harley do if he had thumbs? #scarythoughts
This same question could have easily been running through his mind when I caught him glaring at the sliding glass doors the other day. It was as if he was trying to figure out how to pull back the drapes and slide open the door…
Thumbs just might have made it possible!
I know he has dew claws and while all dogs do not use them, they sort of act like thumbs. Harley is the type of dog who uses his dew claws to hold onto bones, toys, balls or anything he doesn’t wish to let go of…
Yet if Harley DID have thumbs, there’s no telling what he may take on. I imagine his level of dependence on me would diminish tremendously…
There’d be a complete literary take over with the Groovy Goldendoodles™ blog…
Telephone calls and text messaging to his online furrends would run rampant all through the night…
Those days of feeling intimidated by the doorbell when he wants Marshall to come out and play would disappear completely…
I could easily see him putting on his own collar, opening up the front door and barking out “Later ya’ll I’m going for a walk”…
“Humans no longer required” would be his new mantra when he felt like a snack…
No need to bark at me or scratch at that recliner when he was ready for a nap. He’d just pull the lever himself and stretch out for his nap – whenever…
Yep, life would be a little different if he had thumbs. Thank the Doodle he doesn’t!
ONE MORE THING –
Harley and I wish to thank Ann Staub and Shiner of Pawsitively Pets for highlighting Harley as her “Pawsome Pet of the Week” last Friday. It was Harley’s first official “interview” and I was so proud of him. Check it out right here.

Goodness! If my dogs and cats had opposable thumbs, there’s no telling the trouble they’d get into.

Susan, from all the responses we’ve received, I am of the mindset that we ALL would be in a doodle load of trouble 🙂
March 4, 2015
Mom thinks we would get into a whole lot of trouble if we had thumbs! First thing we’d do is let our kitty outside and then raid the peanut butter jar! BOL!
March 4, 2015
I understand the joy of letting the cat our Miley, but I can most definitely relate to that jar of peanut butter!
March 4, 2015
Hey! I never knew what the name was for that part of my granddog’ paw
March 4, 2015
Look at you Grandma Yvonne – now you understand how she’s able to snatch those squeaky toys so fast 🙂
March 4, 2015
Even with thumbs he can’t give himself tummy rubs! #need #mom

Touche’ Emmy. Great comeback! How have you been?
March 4, 2015
Oh, I posted about this “holiday” a few years ago. I forgot it existed! Too funny. I also posted about dewclaws today!
March 4, 2015
I know! When I saw the post Jackie, I smiled and thought “kismet”
March 4, 2015
Sometimes I wish my life was not strictly devoted to being a pet servant but when I think about them having thumbs and no longer needing me for anything it makes me sad. Perhaps that is the perspective often frustrated fur families are meant to find from this silly holiday!
March 4, 2015
Bethany, I think you’ve put your thumb on it (pun intended) – sometimes what aggravates us the most turns out to bring us the most joy!
March 4, 2015
We would definitely be more independent, but I kind of like having Mom do all the stuff for me, so having no real thumbs isn’t so bad.
March 4, 2015
Emma, you don’t have to show all your tricks, let Mom still do stuff for you, and you use your thumbs when she’s not around 🙂
March 4, 2015
oh yes Harley! Imagine all of the “fun” we could have if only we had thumbs!!! Barks and licks and love, Dakota
March 4, 2015
Dakota – you and Harley would be dangerous!
March 4, 2015
I love your thoughts on having thumbs lol
March 4, 2015
Awhhhh – thanks Talent Hounds – take care!
March 4, 2015
Great post, Cathy! It had me chuckling all the way through! I especially liked the image of Harley pulling the recliner lever himself and stretching out for his nap…
March 4, 2015
Rachele, he is a piece of work! When he decides he wants to nap in the chair vs. just sit and stare at things, he starts pawing at the arm of the chair. Yes, I do stop what I’m doing at the computer and spin around in my chair so I can pull the lever. He’s too much – I need a reality show I swear!
March 4, 2015
Haha! That would be SOOOO funny to see Harley or any of my pups put on their leashes, open the door and go for a walk. They would definitely do something like that if they had thumbs! I think its meant to be this way 😉

Girl, I don’t know what I would do if I walked past a window and saw Harley strutting down the street by himself.
March 4, 2015
Mia already can slide the back door open when it’s unlocked, but thumbs would allow her to unlock it.
Leo would use his thumbs to open the microwave and the oven, which is where we stash food we don’t want him to get.
March 4, 2015
Now that’s hilarious Kari – but I could see it all happening. I guess we’re fortunate they don’t have thumbs after all.
March 4, 2015
If my dogs had thumbs, I’d have a much harder time keeping them out of their (and our) food and treats!
March 4, 2015
Cathy I believe you’ve got something there. Pet parents all over the globe would be in trouble.
March 4, 2015
Something tells me there is a very good reason (or two or three) that cats and dogs don’t have thumbs. The thought of Harley taking himself for a walk made me chuckle! Cinco can already open cabinets, if he had thumbs, there would be no point in ever shutting a door around here.
March 4, 2015
If Cinco can open cabinets – we definitely don’t want him to have any thumbs now do we? I just love your cats!
March 4, 2015
If Jade had thumbs we would need to rethink where we put her treats.
March 4, 2015
True stories Jessica – never thought of that one!
March 4, 2015
Cute post! I saw your interview, it was great!
March 4, 2015
Thanks so much Joann – I love the pawsome pet of the week concept. I look forward to learning about new pets every Friday.
March 5, 2015
Hiya Harley! If we had thumbs, we’d give you a big thumbs up. Since we don’t, we hope that you’ll accept our Liebster Award on our Thoughtless Thursday post. ♥
March 6, 2015
Hi there M.K. Thank you so very much for this award. It means a great deal to me, it really does 🙂 Harley & I have actually received this award twice already, and I have yet to complete my questions. It is my intention to complete them this weekend for sure. Thanks again – you’ve made my Friday!

If pets had thumbs, I think they would take over the world! HA!
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
March 6, 2015
No think about it – they would rule!!!!
March 5, 2015
I think you just outlined the reasons why God did not give dogs opposable thumbs! We’d all be in big trouble! 🙂
March 5, 2015
It would be like having a teenager!
March 6, 2015
One that loves to do his own thing I presume Mr. N.
March 5, 2015
you’re coocoo if you think he would ever put on that leash! He might open the door, and go for a walk… naked! Leeanna at not afraid of color
March 6, 2015
True stories LeeAnna, Harley would probably walk right out the door, leaving it wide open too!
