Tuesday while Harley and I were on our morning walk, we realized summer vacation was coming to an end. And while most parents are busy scurrying around for school supplies, and new shoes (of course) – other children have already returned “back to school.”
Tragically though, in the beginning of each new school year too many precious children become victims of senseless and most often “avoidable” accidents occurring while either walking to school or trying to board the school bus.
Therefore we should all “pledge” to do our part – especially when we get into our cars. We should remember about school safety and drive with extreme caution every morning and early afternoon.
Harley and I found this short little poem (by Helen H. Moore) on the internet and think it’s a “doodle-cool” fun way to practice school safety with your children. And who knows – pawhaps you might blend it with a catchy jingle (like the ones that get stuck in your head) and find yourself “jamming” to your own tune when your behind the wheel 🙂 …
“RED means stop, YELLOW means wait,
And GREEN means go, go, go!”
These are the rules that keep us safe-
the very best rules to know!

Harley, do you have any tips for people at 2 way stop signs that have cross-traffic? The people at my daughter’s school apparently do not know how they work and it drives me insane!

Ann, I don’t have children in school anymore and what I see during my morning walks makes me want to scream!!!! I have been seen giving drivers a good talking to at many a corner. I’m sure the only reason they listened to me was because I had Leo with me 🙂

Thanks for the reminder about school. I’ll have to pack extra yummy treats on walks.
We live one block from an elementary school and one of the crossing guards has treats. Honey goes insane and it’s all I can do to keep her from rushing into the street to say “hello.”
Good little rhyme. You should print a large version of your picture and post it near the schools.

Hey Pamela, that’s a good idea. I’m not sure if the schools would post it, but it’s worth looking into. Thanks for the suggestion

It still feels strange not to be going back to a official education and then to hear that school’s in or out-I didn’t even really notice! lol This is very good advice.

For a lot of us – it’s definitely difficult to remember if you’re not connected to school in one capacity of another. I usually don’t notice either.
