Hello everybody – allow me to introduce you to a very special lady…
I’ve talked about her here, here, and here! She’s my “mommy!” and the “other” furrvorite lady in Harley’s life…
My mother was “something else” back in the day. The original “fashionista” wwaaaay before TJ MAXX hit the shopping mall scene…
Sunday, March 2nd DH, The Boys, extended family and I celebrated her 97th birthday. It was a Doodle*tastic day, but bittersweet because of the weather. Due to yet “another” winter storm blowing across the east coast, my siblings were unable to make the journey 🙁
But have no fear – I had her two furrvorite furry furrends with me to make the pawty complete…
Harley has taken on the role of “activities supervisor” when it comes to anything involving my mom. He remains close-by the entire time we’re with her, and she seems to enjoy his company…
Her behavior fascinates me because “before” dementia, my mother never cared much for animals, least of all dogs! Yet there’s a very visible connection between the two. The relationship baffles me.
Furrever the Kevin Costner to his Whitney Houston, Harley isn’t leaving her side.
About two years ago, my mother seemed to be slipping away from us. On one occasion when we came to visit, she was asleep. We didn’t want to wake her, but Harley was not in favor of that plan. He pushed his way into her room and refused to leave her side for quite some time…
Even now, when she naps, he naps…
They were “thick as thieves” in the past. All afternoon long you’d hear “Hey there Poochie-Poochie” and he’d come running in her direction. Now “Poochie-Poochie” just hangs close and I believe they share a secret language, one filled with gestures, licks, nudges, and smiles.
So it was only fitting, as we ALL watched her devour her birthday cupcake, the one lonely crumb that fell, you guessed it – Harley ate…
Happy Birthday Mommy, “oodles and doodles of love” to you today and always….
Thanks for reading, of course I’ll write again…

What an awesome Mom you have, and Harley, you are pawsome! My gramma never liked animals, so my mom was a nightmare child wanting cats, gerbils, rabbits, dogs, etc. She is still not an animal fanatic but she has her own cat and she does well with us dogs. I’m sure your gramma loves your warm company and companionship! Emma…PS happy belated birthday, 97 is sure a big number!

It was a really nice day. She was so alert and responsive (especially to Harley). She has gotten much smaller, but I sometimes catch myself looking at her and seeing the Mom from my youth, so I’m somewhat in denial but it works for me! Yes, Jen it was a great day!
