DOGS AND THEIR TOYS

1

It’s always a great day when boxes arrive at the house. 99% of the time they’re addressed to the Boys.

My primary (and only) purpose on those days is to open the box. #expeditiously

I find it captivating to observe dogs and their toys.

Irregardless to the suggested instructions, my two invent their own games and find unique ways to entertain themselves.

Take the Kong Squeeze Ball with Handle dog toy. It’s designed to be the perfect interactive toy for me and my dog. Perfect for tossing, tugging and retrieving.

It even has a protected squeaker inside to “induce” playing.

I just knew this bright purple thingy would create hours of pulling, tugging and falling down fun. #forall

Silly Doodle Mom, I must have been thinking about somebody else’s dogs.

Jax was only interested if it was held in the air by a human so he could run, jump and grab it #leapingdoodles

4

And Harley?

Well he prefers to play his own game – alone – quietly – exerting as little energy as possible…

5

Thanks chewy.com for sending the toy AND the yummy Orijen Black Angus Beef treats. They did stop long enough to devour almost half the bag…

Tell me, do your dogs follow the rules on the package when it comes to playing with toys? #justwondering

Many dogs seem to prefer playing with others instead of playing by themselves.

I’m guessing you’re right–they just never read the instructions.

Harley looked like he was using doggy dental floss in that picture, BTW. It was adorable.

You’re right Pamela, he does look like he’s flossing BOL

He’s a jumper Jenna. That’s something we didn’t cover in puppy pre-school LOL I’m on my own with curbing that habit…

Oh doggy… these pictures are so adorable! Fluffiness! Great reviews, too.

I love this! Your photo’s are beautiful. I love how Jax only played with it when a human played with him and Harley was the complete opposite! When Mila gets a new toy she usually doesn’t read the instructions either. She always takes it and goes off on her own and plays with it herself. About 10 minutes later, she wants us to play with her. She’s a combination of your two boys. Great article! 🙂

Not usually. Ruby is a bit timid so with encouragement she will play along …as long as we stay with her. Our cat, Rosie, is the opposite. Forget the toys she’s more interested in the wrapper or the bag the toys arrived in.

Harley is a paper, box type of dog also. But mainly after he’s investigated to see if there’s any treats or food available.

Your family – people, dogs and all – are adorable. Sometimes I feel like we dog bloggers don’t show enough of our people. Though it looks like you have a pre-teen boy? Which means you won’t be getting many photos of him soon. And for a long time. Teenagers! Crazy making.

Flea, believe it our not those little boys are my next door neighbors! They do not have a dog, so they play with mine. They’re the ones that walk with me almost everyday. The neighborhood calls them my grandchildren. The older kids that you may see from time to time are mine.

  • Monika & Sam
    June 24, 2015

Sam has never been interested in those kinds of pull-toys-he will only engage if it’s a stuffie and then only to eviscerate it and remove all of the stuffing and ripping out the eyes and button noses. Standard poodles are very hard on stuffies. 😉

    • Cathy Bennett
      June 24, 2015

Little stuffies seem to last around here. It’s almost as if they feel like it’s a baby of some sort and they try to protect it. Harley has one that he’s been carrying around for years. This does not however, apply to the larger versions #gofigure

My dogs’ only rule in toys is Keep Away. Keep away from someone who wants your toy, taunt someone who doesn’t have a toy so that you can keep away from them… I am a little disturbed that it’s a form of dog bullying or something. BOL

      June 24, 2015

Hey Karen – didn’t someone once say – possession was nine tenths of the law? BOL

We posted our review of this same toy last week… Penny sure did love it, but then she started chewing on the handle during one of her “playing alone” times… So I’ve had to pick it up and we now only play with it when supervised, of course. She does LOVE to hear the ball squeak!

    • Cathy Bennett
      June 24, 2015

No one’s destroyed it yet – My two are very destructive. They just see it differently and play differently with it.

  • Taryn
    June 24, 2015

That looks like a great toy! Funny that each dog has his own play style.

Glad to see you refer to your two as “the Boys”…I use that for my two as well. I did it in front of a neighbor recently, and they gave me this funny look. Of course they weren’t “dog people” so I guess they didn’t understand 😉

Karyn, Someone from my church heard my VM message and thought I had two young sons at home. I laughed and laughed. When I composed myself and explained she laughed too!

LOL You never know about dogs and toys. We have this dog toy and 2 out of three of my dogs love it. Well, the third likes to shack it around while he softly growls… so I’m thinking that’s a “no.”

    • Cathy Bennett
      June 24, 2015

Could be a no and then again it might just be his pretend “kill” sound as if he were in a jungle battle LOL #justsaying

  • Tenacious Little Terrier
    June 24, 2015

Mr. N mostly prefers to play with humans but he will toss the toy up for himself and chase it every once in a while.

    • Cathy Bennett
      June 24, 2015

See, that’s a great technique. Playing by yourself always guarantees a fun time. That and you usually win LOL

I’ve bought my hamsters toys, but they like the free stuff just as much: an empty kleenex box with a circle cut in the back so they can run through or a bunch of coffee sleeves that make a tunnel. Hope your week is going OK.

    • Cathy Bennett
      June 24, 2015

Thanks Emmy – things are going fine, it’s so hot here, I hope you’re taking it easy in all this heat. Jax and Harley both enjoy “free” stuff too!

Jeanne, Harley was born for the camera, Jax has been a work in progress, he’s getting better at it – I keep telling myself, he’s only a baby.

Rita would probably do the same as Harley, She’s a laid-back sorta player! Jax is a Jumping Jax!

Jackie you nailed it – Jax is a jumping Jax. He’s the maniac of the family. Rita and Harley know how to pace themselves LOL

I’m with Harley, let the young ones run around like crazy. I prefer to relax in the grass and munch on some tasty treats!

    • Cathy Bennett
      June 24, 2015

Emma, if I didn’t know any better I would think some where down the lineage tree you two are related!

  • Jan K
    June 24, 2015

Our crew makes their own rules too! Luke’s favorite is to shove the toy in Sheba’s face to try to get her to try to take it away from him. If she’s up for it, the tugging and snarling begins! 🙂

    • Cathy Bennett
      June 24, 2015

I think perhaps Jax is still too young for the tugging game. They really haven’t started that yet. I’m sure it will come soon.

      • Jan K
        June 26, 2015

I think you are right. Luke did not start doing this with Sheba until he was the same size as she was. I guess he waited until they were on equal footing!

          June 26, 2015

I think that’s definitely the case here in Doodleville.

    June 24, 2015

Great review, my gang has this too and they still pick it up and play with it. Gambler took your advice and tried the hump day gig with me today, he got a spanking!

    • Cathy Bennett
      June 24, 2015

No fair Joanne – you can’t spank because someone did the hump day dance. Give Gambler a hug, apologize and tell him you didn’t understand the rules 🙂

Definitely no judging here in Doodleville Andrea – never ever (wink-wink) just making an observation of a rather “strange” way to play!

We were able to try out the KONG Squeezz Ring with Rope recently and Charlie loved it! So much fun for tug and fetch. These are really great toys for active dogs!

    • Cathy Bennett
      June 24, 2015

Yes they are – I just think they would work much better if two Doodles (no names) would try to play with them the way it was intended 🙂 #gofigure
