DOG TIRED

Last year when I took Jaxson to the Annual Dog Day Afternoon pool event – he gave new meaning to the phrase “Dog Tired.”

DOG TIRED

That’s right folks after zipping around the shallow end – for hours – like the Tasmanian Devil, my lil Demon Doodle was so exhausted he tried to put himself to sleep IN the water! #cantmakethisup

KNOW YOUR DOGS LIMITATIONS –

Even though exercise is generally based on a dogs –

  • age
  • breed
  • size
  • overall health

It’s important to understand and respect your dogs limitations to avoid injury.

While Jaxson loves the water, and will play endlessly (or until he takes a floating nap) – Harley would probably run away from home if I attempted to keep him out to sea that long…DOG TIRED

TOO MUCH EXERCISE? –

Kate O’Brien of SlimDoggy wrote an excellent article (published in Dogster) asking a prolific question:

Is it possible to give your dogs too much exercise?

This is a good read if you’ve ever (or never) pondered the question.

Whatever your fitness plan for your dog may be, always remember there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Enjoy the remainder of the summer, and have some fun with your dog while doing it!

Be in charge of how you feel – and today choose happy! ❤️

I am not a veterinarian nor a scientist. I’m a pet parent always interested in understanding more about my dogs.

This is our contribution in the BlogPaws Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop.

The picture of your little “demon doodle” falling asleep in the water is classic.

Trust me, Jaxson is classic all by himself.

That’s a good way to cool off, too, from a good round of play. Maybe Jackson can teach my Basset minion to go in a pool, too. I don’t get in water, ’cause I am a kitty cat. Have a great summer, Miss Cathy, Jackson & Harley! Purrs.

Valentine – you should dip your paw in the water once or twice. You just might like it.

Who’d have thought your little dervish could get THAT tired. Too cute.

Monika – you have to see him in the water, he loves it and won’t slow down at all. Then all of a sudden POOF – he’s exhausted and will lay down anywhere! LOL

That is such a cute picture! Yes, it is possible to over exercise! I have a client right now who’s dog is injured from too much exercise.

We are careful with Phoenix because she could go, go, go and never shows signs of visible exhaustion. We want to make sure she doesn’t get injured but we also have to worry about her mental health as well. When she’s too tired, she is unable to cope with situations like handling meeting new dogs, etc. The more tired she is, the more likely she will be cranky. Lots of exercise can also cause dogs to stay in a heightened state of arousal, which is not good for them.

Harley suffers from the arousal thing every once and a while. Usually it’s after he and Jaxson have worn themselves out in a park or open field racing, romping and running. When it starts I immediately end the play and we “walk it off”

Now that’s funny! Jaxson must have really been tired.

He was! It was a long day at the pool with a lot of dogs. He had himself a blast.

That’s adorable! The collies are shocked that not only was he playing in the water…but napping! They won’t even voluntarily get their paws wet!

Collies don’t like water? Or is it an individual thing? Jaxson craves it while Harley prefers to dip and run LOL

Jaxson was trying to bring back the waterbed!! I learned Bentley’s limitations at the Grand Canyon. He definitely got too tired and too hot so I am very careful now since he is a senior dog. Pierre is like Jaxson and knows no limits.

Now that’s a great title MK!!! I think since I moved South, I am more aware of the heat and the degree of exercise the Boys get. Can’t wait for September – most of the humidity will be gone and we can hang out more during the day. I too may close attention to Harley since he is a senior pup now.

We’ve never seen a dog sleeping in water before! Mom says wild dogs are like little kids at bedtime. At some point, the parent has to step in and say enough, time for bed, or time to stop playing and rest.

And your Mom is correct Emma. I took him out of the water after that so he could take a power nap. He was fine…

OMD, that photo is SO cute! Other than puppies crashed in their water bowls, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a dog fall asleep in water before! That’s a new one!

I don’t think it’s possible for Rita to get too much exercise… she’s pretty lazy and even when we run together, she goes pretty slow. I’ve got the opposite problem with her!

Leave it to Jaxson to do something original. LOL

OMD! I love Jaxson’s water bed!

There is a lot I don’t know about how much exercise dogs need. Honey is magical in her ability to expend little energy when we’re stuck on board and have constant energy when we get off the boat. For which I am very thankful.

We’ll be taking her to the beach we’re anchored off soon and the sleepy couch potato seated beside me now will be come a bundle of energy.

Apparently – so does he LOL
I watched him for a few minutes thinking that he would get up – but he just seemed too comfy and I thought – “he might just drown!!”

How are things going for you all?

That is too funny! It’s hard to find the balance sometimes – wanting to let them enjoy themselves to their heart’s content, while being sure they don’t overdo or injure themselves.
Luckily these days Cricket seems to be good with letting us know when she’s had enough – wisdom must come with age. 🙂

I think you’re right. Can’t remember the last time ole man Harley over exerted himself LOL
