HURRICANE PREPARATIONS

Hurricane preparations are underway here in Doodleville, cause a hurricane is coming.

Been doing my best to keep the Boys as active as possible these last 48 hours. I want them to be exhausted by the time the rain comes. The best way to do this? Lot’s of outdoor activities…

HURRICANE PREPARATIONS

Last night they watched us re-arrange the garage to accommodate lawn furniture and the Doodle Wagon..

HURRICANE PREPARATIONS

Sop far, we’ve seen a drizzle of rain this morning, and all indications are that we will see increased rain and heavy winds late tonight into Saturday.

OUR PLANS? –

Remaining in our home. My dear sweet Infantry/Airborne/ Ranger/Pathfinder husband has made sure we have everything we need. #lovemeasoldier

We do not live in a coastal community. We are north and inland of the downtown Charleston area. So we shall stay put.

CAN DOGS SENSE IMPENDING STORMS? –

Often I’ve heard that dogs can sense when a storm is approaching. It’s not that they are #simplyamazing – it’s scientific. It’s based on barometric pressure –

When the barometric pressure changes and static electricity differs, it is often a sign that a tornado, hurricane or thunderstorm is on the horizon. Dogs feel these changes and will often not only warn the family by trying to herd them into one area but also seek shelter in a small confined space themselves. Source: Canidae

And that’s not all –

  • Their sense of smell – allows them to smell rain from a longer distance.
  • Their amazing ears – canine hearing is about 20 times more sensitive than ours. Dogs not only hear thunder before us, they feel the vibrations also.

With such sensitive senses and a basic “animal instinct” born of years of evolution, dogs know when the weather is changing, they prepare for it and they try to warn their people. So while you may see a nice sunny afternoon, your dog knows if the sunshine will be cut off by dark clouds, pouring rain and rumbling thunder. Pay attention and before you know it you’ll be like us, looking to your pup instead of the weatherman to prepare for oncoming storms. Source: Canidae

Right now as I write this post, they are calm as #doodlecucumbers

HURRICANE PREPARATIONS

The storm is scheduled to reach our area late this evening and remain throughout the night. We’ll pawbably all cuddle in the bed together.

Please keep those in the direct path of Hurricane Matthew in your thoughts and prayers.

I will continue to post updates on how the Boys are doing via their Facebook page. #login

ONE MORE THING –

Earlier this week, I took Harley to the Blessing of the Therapy Dogs event at MUSC.

Imagine my surprise today to see Jaxson #notatherapydog make it in the local newspaper…

HURRICANE PREPARATIONS

For those NOT experiencing inclement weather this weekend #enjoy

For the rest of us – stay dry and be safe

Hey Deirdre, so far so good, but the worst is yet to come, they say we should experience the storm at full capacity after midnight. I hope be fast asleep by then. Keep praying….

I was wondering if you guys were headed back up this way for the weekend. I’m so glad to hear that you are Not in harms way. Stay safe.

I thought about it for a fleeting moment Claudette, and then I started to think about sitting on the highway for endless hours with everyone else trying to get back. So when Lee said it was safe for us to stay, I said “okay.”

I’m sipping my wine, working on the computer, and loving having Lee, Harley and Jaxson all in the same room with me. So far so good, but in a few hours I plan to go to bed LOL

As we’ve been watching the storm track, we’ve been thinking of all of you.

Hope you make it easily through the storm and enjoy the togetherness until it passes by.

The boat is up on stands in a Virginia marina while I’ve been painting the bottom. We’re hoping the winds aren’t strong enough to blow us over. Or at least not unless there’s enough water in the boatyard for us to be able to float away safely. 🙂

Hi there girlfriend – You were on my mind today! We are doing okay #sofar Lee says we are too far inland to experience what the media is predicting for the city and coastal areas. The Boys are really chilled at the moment and soon it will be my bedtime 🙂 I didn’t know VA was getting bad weather. You be safe too. Can’t wait to see you and Mike again.

    Jax is a star!!!

I was thinking about you this morning as I was writing my storm post. We don’t have hurricanes and when I look on social media I realize how lucky we are. Rodrigo, on the other hand, doesn’t and he’s been very upset with the windy weather.

Stay safe my friend. Your brother cracks me up.

    • Cathy Bennett
      October 7, 2016

Yep – I’m gonna experience my very first hurricane. They’re not to popular in NYC where I grew up and I’ve never encountered one during all of our military moves. I know we will experience strong winds and tons of rain, but the storm is supposed to arrive after midnight in our area and everyone knows that I get up early in the morning and crash early at night. I am forcing myself to stay up as late as I can tonight so when I do fall asleep I will be out like a light. Lee is the night owl so he’ll be up. My brother is comical – that is the truth. Can’t believe you won’t get on that ride with me 🙂

      October 7, 2016

Hi Dixie – Give Hera a hug for me, I think we’ll be fine. We are inland and on higher ground. I know the wind and rain will still be intense but Lee said we’ll be fine, and I trust him. The brunt of the storm is supposed to come through after midnight – and you know me, I’ll be fast asleep. I miss you – we must catch up on things once this passes.

That’s so interesting about dogs being able to sense the weather change – smelling the rain and feeling the vibrations of the thunder. I will have to pay attention to Ruby the next time we have severe storms. We are up in the Chicago area so no hurricanes, but definitely some bad thunderstorms.

    Stay safe, dry and calm!!!

    • Cathy Bennett
      October 7, 2016

I found it interesting too. So far – things are relatively quiet but I know this won’t last too long. I hope it comes after midnight as projected – I will be asleep by then 🙂 The Boys are resting comfortably – there doesn’t seem to be a call in their world. I will keep them the bed with me and watch their behavior. I’ll let you know if they reacted before the storm came.

Stay safe! Hurricanes don’t sound fun at all! We have never been through one before, only really bad snow storms that were so bad we couldn’t get out.

The exercise worked well Cathy, they weren’t worn out but they were relaxed enough to chill and not focus on the wind and rain.

I’ve heard of the bathtub being a favorite “retreat” to many dogs. Apparently weather isn’t something that bothers Harley nor Jaxson.

Doesn’t look like the boys have a clue what might be going on.

Not sure if they were “clue-less” but they sure acted as if they were “care-less” 🙂 Have a great week!

  • Callie, Shadow, and Ducky's Mom
    October 17, 2016

Glad that Hurricane Matthew is gone. You were all on my mind that weekend, and in my prayers. I kept watching FB to keep tabs on you.

Meanwhile, Shadow and Ducky are usually pretty mellow during storms; but poor Callie was always anxious – as you quoted – long before the skies darkened and the rain started. She would start whining and crying, and gluing herself to me at least half an hour before the storm. She would literally stick her head between my legs when I was standing at the kitchen sink (or anywhere else in the house), making it almost impossible to move. If there is anything good about her having lost her battle with lymphoma, it’s that she no longer fears storms.

Thank you my friend – Hurricane Matthew was a blip on the radar in our neighborhood, we are inland and north of the Coastal areas so much so, people from the city come to my neck of the woods when there’s an evacuation. I spent so much time out in the yard with them days and hours leading up to the storm that we all fell asleep before the worst of it hit. The other blessing for Charleston was the tide, it wasn’t high when the storm came through. I love when you share memories about Callie. She sounds like an A-mazing animal. Keep telling us more about her please. Take care
