I don’t know about you, but I am tickled to doodle at the thought of Summer’s arrival. Winter’s been around entirely too long. #ifyouaskme With that said, I wanted to share a few canine summer safety tips because we can never ever be too careful when it comes to protecting our pets.
I believe pets love the summer as much as we do, but it’s up to us to keep them safe.
DID YOU KNOW –
Most lawn and garden products may be hazardous. So as you become “Picasso” of your backyard, make sure those plants and fertilizers within your dog’s reach are not toxic…
Here are only some of many tips to keep in mind as we all gear up for great summer fun.
GENERAL SUMMER SAFETY TIPS –
Hot weather can make us all uncomfortable, and our dogs are no exception. Please, please, please:
Never leave your dog unattended in direct sunlight or in a closed vehicle. Heatstroke can occur and lead to brain damage or death…
Always make sure your dog has access to fresh water…
Keep your dog on a leash when he’s outdoors to prevent accidents and injuries…
Try to avoid strenuous exercise with your dog on extremely hot days and refrain from physical activity when the sun’s heat is most intense…
BEACH TIP –
Taking your dog to the beach is a great way to spend the day. Harley loves the beach. These are important precautions to remember:
Start in shallow water. Try to coax him in with a treat or toy — but always keep your dog within reach.
Provide plenty of fresh water and shade for your dog…
Check with a lifeguard for daily water conditions — dogs are easy targets for jellyfish and sea lice…
Cool ocean water is tempting to your dog. Do not allow him to drink too much sea water. Salt in the water will make him sick…
SWIMMING TIPS –
Majority of dogs can swim and they usually love it. Harley’s a fluffy fish as long as the water’s not too deep. #pawdeep But dogs entering the water for the first time should be tested. Swimming is a great form of exercise, but don’t let your dog over do it. Swimming uses new muscles and your dog will tire easily:
Be careful of strong tides that are hazardous for even the best swimmers…
Never leave your dog unattended! You should always be in a position to help him get out of the water…

Have a safe summer, boys! You know Katie grew up drinking salt water, so her system can handle it, but most dogs get sick and it happens almost instantly! When we lived on the North Sea, we saw the dogs who were there for the first time drink the water and get sick all the time, but they usually only try it once.

Emma, I remember when Leo drank salt water at the Dewey Beach Doodle Romp his first year, he puked all the way home, and I’m talking a 4 hr ride! Interesting that Katie developed a tolerance for it. Dogs are amazing. Here’s to a safe and fabulous summer for all of us!

I’ve never heard of sea lice. Chester and Gretel don’t go in to the water at the beach though. Gretel will stand so close to the edge that sometimes a wave catches her but she backs up as soon as it does. She loves to stand on the shore and watch the birdies.
