I don’t wear shoes…
Doodle Mom tried to get me to wear them once upon a winter when I was a pup. She lost that one. They’re not very comfy and it’s too difficult to walk. I don’t chew shoes – never have. I don’t even play with them. They’re not for me, I have no interest.
But when my Doodle Dad started bringing shoes home and leaving them in the garage, I wondered “what in the doodle are you doing?”…
I heard him on the phone say there were too many people in our Community, our State, our Country and the Nation living every day without the basic comfort of having a good pair of shoes to wear.
He knew he couldn’t “outfit” everyone, but he believed he and the Social Action Committee (Pi Lambda Lambda Chapter) of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. could try and help a few.
I didn’t think much of it at the time, but each day, more people started bringing shoes to the house. Each day, Doodle Dad brought home bags of shoes.
The shoes were taking over the garage…
The more I looked at those shoes multiplying in our garage – the more I wanted to help him with this project.
But first, we needed a name . The project had no name. I remembered Doodle Dad talking about helping people without shoes – get shoes. He said everybody needs happy feet. Hummm, “happy feet” I liked that – but it needed something.
Then I thought about Doodle Mom – She’s the social media human in our house, and she giggles to herself whenever she makes up a “hashtag” word. It just made plain doodle sense – #simple…
They agreed to let me help. They put me in charge of inventory – It is my responsibility to make sure:
- we have two of everything
- they’re the same size
- and the buckles fasten and shoelaces aren’t missing
Even though our garage is almost covered with shoes…
I know we still need oodles and doodles more, so I borrowed some wheels and decided to canvas the neighborhood…
Pulling that wagon was no joke. One time the penny loafer that Mom propped behind the wheel slipped. We were on an incline and the wheels were beginning to roll backwards. I tried to bark but fear stole my voice. #scary
Thanks to my good furrends at Olde Towne Pet Resort – my wagon pulling days are over. They offered to help. #lovethem
They’ve agreed to be a drop off location for humans in the Springfield, VA area.
We’ve even put up a sign…
…and it’s already working – we’ve got shoes #hotdoodleydog
I heard my pawents talking, and they said the plan is to keep collecting shoes until the end of March.
#GOT SHOES?
If you live in the Northern VA area – can we have them?
Olde Towne Pet Resort is located at 8101 Alban Road, Springfield, VA 22150 (703-455-9000)
Don’t worry I’ve got plenty of room in my wagon right here in this corner…
Thanks so much for sharing a piece of your Monday with us, be kind to someone and watch it change their day 🙂

Wow that is awesome Harley! Do you think you will run out of room for all of these shoes soon? Your garage is looking quite full!
February 10, 2015
Ann, the garage is “done!” Looking online today trying to find a place that will donate those large bins so we can place them in there.

Good job, Harley! We’re donating some old clothes to a fabric drive a local school is hosting. I’ll have to see if Mr. N can carry them.
February 10, 2015
Get Mr. N. a wagon – but put him in it – don’t make him pull it!

Pawsome project, Harley! The store where Mom buys her running shoes and gear also recycles old running/walking shoes which is nice.
February 10, 2015
That’s such a great idea for a shoe store to do that Emma!

That us amazing and awesome Harley! We just cleaned out a closest over the weekend and donated a lot of shoes! I couldn’t believe that many shoes fit in one closest! I had baby shoes from Gracie in there that we’re hardly worn and some were new with the tags still on!
February 10, 2015
Jen, so many people have donated shoes in that very same condition. Some shoes were never taken out of the box, never worn, and still had tags on them. So happy Harley decided to get involved, which in turn has me involved. Can’t wait to distribute them – what an awesome experience that will be 🙂

What a great helper you are. I donated a load of shoes to a church once that were sending them over to a third world country for those people over there.
February 10, 2015
That’s wonderful JoAnn – I’m finding out that shoes are something many people have an abundance of – or none at all. I’m sure you’re shoes were greatly appreciated.

Good work Harley!!!

That’s a lot of shoes! What a great cause. There was a local animal rescue here that collected shoes last year. They were paid by another non-profit for them so the shoes helped people AND pets! It was a cool closest clean-out drive!

Bethany, you got that right! I felt so guilty when I went through my own closet. I didn’t realize how many shoes I was holding onto and not wearing. True eye opener.
February 11, 2015
Hope you get shoes up to the rafters. And who could resist Harley the spokesdog?
Personally, as someone who lives in a college town, I appreciate hearing a happy story about a fraternity. Good work, Doodle Dad!
February 11, 2015
Pamela, I have loved this Fraternity since college (if I was a man, I would have pledged). Doodle Dad and the men in his chapter are so socially active and community conscience they are constantly trying to make a difference. It’s been a blast working with them and this shoe drive. We’ll keep you posted till the end! Take care my friend.

What a wonderful idea, and thoughtful thing to do to help people. I wish I loved closer….I’d clean out my closet. I hope it goes well….it looks like you already had a very good start on it!
February 11, 2015
JanK I wish you lived closer too! We could hang out and everything 🙂 I’m thrilled that Harley is getting more people to donate, this is such a worthy cause. Take care and Happy Valentines Day.
