The other day (before the snow landed) my human furrend thought it would be cool to teach me a few “stick tricks.”
That’s right, stick tricks!
It all started when he saw me trying to get my favorite stick out of the tree…
I’ve been playing with this stick since last summer. It’s my “go-to” source of entertainment when I’m outside. Everybody on the block knows about this stick.
Either Doodle Dad or the man next door places it in the tree when I’m done playing to protect it from the lawn mower.
People say I’m an easy going Doodle, I play well by myself. Once I retrieve my stick from the tree, I’m happy just chewing on it and/or carrying it around.
When Marshall came outside, he sat down with me and started talking about a trick he wanted to teach me…
He convinced me this would be an awesome trick to learn. At first I was all for it. But when he took the stick from me, I quickly lost interest…
This was more like work. He held the stick in the air, and yelled over and over – “Harley, up – up – up”…
I jumped up a few times and tried to grab my stick. But as soon as I got close, he would pull it away…
I was so confused.
Turns out what he actually wanted me to do was walk on my hind legs towards the stick…
…why in the doodle didn’t he just say that in the beginning!
An entire afternoon for just one trick? I don’t think so, Doodles don’t play that! I went home… #withmystick

That’s great! I wonder how many times we think we’re communicating perfectly what we want and our dogs are thinking “what on earth are these humans on about?!” Seems to be a daily occurrence for me judging by the looks I get! WW Woofs from The Dogvine Crew

That’s an excellent question Teresa (good blog material also!) – I’m pretty sure a great deal of the time dogs are wondering “what on earth are these humans thinking?” Happy WW back to you!

Love your big signature! Sticks…I guess that is a good trick he taught you, but I would feel the same way about it at first if someone took my stick away.
February 25, 2015
Thanks Emma! I’m working on my penpawship!
February 25, 2015
OH Harley…kids just don’t understand doodles sometimes do they?
February 25, 2015
No they don’t Slim, if they did they would surely have brought a piece of chicken or bacon outside with them. Don’t you think?
February 25, 2015
These boys… we have a favorite college boy who, when he was your friend’s age, wanted to teach the doodles tricks like this. The doodles behaved liked Harley. “Okay, we will put up with this until we are tired of it.” (which was always about 5 minutes…) Love it!!!
February 25, 2015
Dash & Lilly, come to think of it (thanks to Sookie for pointing it out) the little humans didn’t even come bearing gifts/treats. How do you expect a doodle to do anything without a treat? BOL
February 25, 2015
Cole says,
how silly humans are! That stick wasn’t to be used trivially! It’s your go to stick. He should have used a squeaky toy or another stick, and I am sure you’d have played along to make him happy.
People don’t get poodle’doodles we are so smart but want to make them laugh so we go along with their “tricks”
Cole at not afraid of color
February 25, 2015
Cole – you are absoDOODLEtutely correct – “respect the stick” 🙂
February 25, 2015
Gotta be careful of those little tykes, they always like to take stuff away from us! BOL! Have fun!!
February 25, 2015
Yes they do Miley, they’re slippery little short people BOL
February 25, 2015
Oh Harley! Did your furrend at least had treats for you?
I would have ignored him!
But I’m glad you’re on your way to learning a brand new trick!
xoxo Sookie

That’s an excellent question Sookie, come to think of it, no they did not. PAWhaps that’s why he wasn’t that interested. I will have to tell them. Good call. Thanks for stopping by 🙂
February 25, 2015
OH Harley you got to be faster than that next time!
February 25, 2015
He was trying Talent Hounds, believe me – he was trying LOL
February 25, 2015
Wow! That stick looks like a lot of fun 🙂 Your little human is adorable Harley. You are lucky to have such an awesome playmate. Your tricks are pretty pawsome too 🙂
February 25, 2015
Thanks Robin – he plays with him just about everyday!
February 25, 2015
It was nice of you to be so patient with the little boy, Harley. Nice trick, by the way, walking on your hind legs like that.
February 25, 2015
He has a lot of patience with Marshall, but his hind leg walking isn’t but about three or four steps BOL
February 25, 2015
I am impressed that you are able to keep your favorite stick since last summer. That is a good trick in itself.
February 25, 2015
Mark – He has help from her friends. They all have been saving the stick from inclement weather and lawn mowers, etc…
February 25, 2015
Harley tells a delightfully tricky stick tale!
February 25, 2015
I couldn’t agree more Ruth. Thanks for stopping by!
February 25, 2015
I’m so impressed with the trick, your young trainer and how you learned to walk on two legs. Wonderful!
February 25, 2015
HA! Sharon he took two or three steps and I thought the entire neighborhood was going to erupt in a ticket tape parade! So cute – and funny 🙂

People are hard to understand sometimes!

True stories Mr N. True stories!
February 25, 2015
Harley, I don’t mind telling you that is one fine example of stickage! No wonder everyone helps you take care of it. I love the homes in your neighborhood!
February 25, 2015
HA! I love that word “stickage” – that’s too funny.
February 25, 2015
So glad you got your stick back, Harley.
February 25, 2015
I am too Vicki – He ran right into the garage with it, and it’s stayed there all week.
February 25, 2015
Harley, that’s impressive. Even just a coupla steps is a start! Baby steps, er, Doodle steps! Maybe you can have some more lessons once the snow’s gone!
February 25, 2015
Harley, I bet you could teach your Human a trick or two!
February 26, 2015
Cathy I believe he probably could. I wonder if I would cooperate like he did LOL
February 26, 2015
BOL… oh Harley, all I can say is you go boy!
February 26, 2015
Ann – it’s never a dull moment here in Doodleville 🙂
February 26, 2015
Way to go, Marshall! I can’t wait to see what tricks Harley learns next. 🙂
February 28, 2015
With Marshall and Harley together there’s no telling!
February 26, 2015
Harley, that is a really great stick you have there! I have never been able to keep the same one for any length of time so I am very impressed that you have taught the neighborhood to put it back where it belongs!!
February 28, 2015
Sometimes it goes back – and sometimes it doesn’t. I haven’t seen it since this last big snowfall, next week when the temperatures rise a little we can look for it – again!
February 27, 2015
I love that you keep your stick in the tree. We used to keep a pile of about 6 or so sticks in a special spot away from the lawn so they’d always be accessible (and not eaten by the lawnmower.)
–Wags (and purrs) from Life with Dogs and Cats
February 28, 2015
Susan, we’ve had a few end up in the lawnmower bag so we’re getting better by picking it up once we’re finished playing. I hope it survives all this snow – time will tell.
February 28, 2015
You are a very smart dog, Harley, you just need to train Marshall a little better. 🙂
February 28, 2015
As soon as the weather gets a little better we will certainly work on that – with Marshall that is 🙂

Looks like lots of fun!
