PUPPY CLASSES

By Wednesday, May 20, 2015 43 , , Permalink

I enrolled Jax in puppy classes at Olde Towne Pet Resort. It was time for him to socialize with other puppies and learn a few things.

We will attend class on Tuesday evenings for the next several weeks…

This is our first week, but it’s the second week of class for everyone else.

WHY?

Because Jax refused to listen to me or his brother and sprained/strained his back leg.

HOW?

Playing “Jax in the box” hopping on and off the deck furniture #anotherblogpost

Placed on the “injured reserve” list for five days, he was restricted to minimal activity. Prescription anti-inflammatory drugs twice a day and instructions to “take it easy” kept us on house arrest last week. #unbelieveable

Class is small, which is a good thing because Jax hasn’t been around a group of puppies before.

With a small class, he’s able to make friends one at a time.

Meet Sully…

Class lasted one hour. Surprisingly it flew by.

Jeff the instructor involves the pups and engages the parents which keeps the training fun and interesting.

We went over quite a bit and when Frank Sinatra had his moment on stage #demodoodle he did it “his way.” He finally agreed to sit down on the third “sit” command LOL #threetimesacharm

But the highlight of his evening came after class. He showed us his best doodle strut as he walked across the room and introduced himself to this gorgeous Goldendoodle girl he’d been staring at all evening…

Poor Jax! I’m glad he’s feeling better and was able to join the class… and meet that pretty girl – Yowza! Puppy class is so much fun, I loved taking that class w/ my Husky, the puppies are all so darn cute! Good luck, I’m sure Jax will graduate at the top of the puppy class!

Oh the joys of puppy classes. They are so fun and perfect for socializing Jax, although it doesn’t seem like he needs it lol!

Talent Hounds I was shocked in the beginning of class, he was actually shy. First time around a group of dogs AND Harley wasn’t with him. He got comfortable after about 15 minutes and then it was on and popping!

Puppy classes are so much fun. Isn’t is great to watch your dog learn to socialize with other pups? Jax is so adorable!

Thanks Cara – I am always fascinated with everything they do. Dogs/animals amaze me in how they communicate. So interesting. Thanks for stopping by.

Well, truth be told, Lilly is a puppy class drop out but Dash made it all the way through. Both doodles always had to do it their way. Lilly was never ever ever happy at class. She was on edge and jumpy and snarly. We tried twice but never found a happy combination of puppies, teacher and setting. Dash of course loved every minute of the entire thing. He would probably like to go back and do it all again! Jax is beyond adorable in your pictures. Keep it up Jax!!

It was interesting Deirdre to watch Jax play shy in the beginning of class. I wasn’t really sure what was happening – but then I realized – he was alone, without Harley, and this was a first. Once he warmed up to the room and its inhabitants he was more himself. I’m curious to see what happens next Tuesday.

We just finished the obedience class at PetSmart. It’s definitely something fun to blog about. The secret is to continue training outside of class – Luna does very well now, despite her jumpy moments, which we continue to work on. Good luck with your class!

That’s very encouraging Christina – I have a few things I am specifically looking for techniques in – so that I can train correctly the first time. T

Yikes! A case of puppy love at puppy school! Bailie enjoyed puppy kindergarten. She and mom both despised obedience one and two, though. Enjoy and watch those youngsters.

It’s like “Scandal” Emma! – Cracks me up. I’m trying this group learning thing with an open mind, I’ll keep you and your mom posted.

Poor Jax. It looks like regardless of injury, he is making good friends.

      May 20, 2015

Travel Doc – he’s completely healed. I just panicked because he screamed so much when it happened and then he started dragging the leg. I prefer to be safe then sorry. He’s very, very, active. Like that kid you see bouncing all over the walls at the dentist office LOL

That looks like a great class! Sorry to hear that Jax hurt himself. I guess we all do bonehead things sometimes. Heaven knows I have! I hope Jax is able to learn all of the important things he needs to learn to stay safe. The other pups in that class are really cute too.

I’m saying the same thing Robin. Not looking for too much at this age, would like very much for a great technique for recall. Let’s see what happens!

      May 20, 2015

The play sessions in between class are the best part. Jax is learning how to have fun without Harley – he’s learning to be his own man LOL

Jax, we hope you’re feeling better now. Enjoy school! We hope you learn some good stuff.

      May 20, 2015

The way I see it, if all he learns is to have fun with the other pups, we’ve done a good thing!

Puppy class can be stressful. Here’s a funny, but true story – my first dog growing up was named Rusty and he was a puppy class drop out. Why, you ask? Because during one of the final tests, he stopped midway and peed on my dad’s leg in front of the whole class!

P.S.: We just joined Pinterest and are going to follow you now.

I seriously wouldn’t be surprised if JAx did something like that – LOL I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn’t happen. We’ll keep you posted 🙂

Lauren, he’s fine, our vet didn’t want him doing too much last week since his little mishap occurred Monday evening and class was the following day. He’s back to leaping, tumbling, slipping and sliding all over the place again!

I’m so glad you have a good puppy kindergarten to take Jax to. It’s such an exciting time and there’s so much to learn.

As for the jumping… I’m feeling you there.

Honey’s breeder told us to keep her from making big jumps while her bones were still growing. Yeah, and how do you do that?

We’re lucky she never hurt herself like Jax. But she certainly tried her darndest.
