RESCUE

Can you rescue / adopt a Goldendoodle?

R

YES! –

Believe it or not, these adorable little creatures are surrendered to rescue re-homing organizations more than you would believe.

WHY? –

Impulsive decisions. Sometimes when something new hits the scene people want it – not giving much thought to the responsibility it requires –

  • High energy means just that! They are very playful and active. They require attention
  • Hypo-allergenica term often misunderstood
  • Lack of knowledgenot understanding crossbreed dogs
  • Maintenanceregular grooming is involved

Harley probably would have succumbed to his illness had we not found one another…

IMG_0228

…but truth be told – he really saved me!

Life hasn’t been the same since he leaped into my arms 7 years ago.

David Tinsch – a FaceBook friend wrote an entry one day about “finding” his Goldendoodle Charlie. Sometimes when you think you’re rescuing the animal, he’s really rescuing you…

Charlei-&-David

9 years ago this morning, I walked into an animal shelter in New Jersey to meet and check out dog #11610. I had, “a hole in my heart” as someone told me. A hole that only a dog could fill.

Multiple buildings in a row, connected by short covered sidewalks. Pit bull after pit bull, Rottweilers, mutts and more pit bulls.

And finally, in the last cage of the last building…was dog #11610.

As I walk towards his “cell”, he laid down and slit his paws under the door.

A volunteer led us to a small enclosed yard where we played for 15 minutes or so, to see “if I liked him”. We wrestled and played on the ground, and I laughed the entire time. He was dirty, matted, and smelled of urine. But the reality was that, “he had me at hello”!

My eyes filled with tears as I said goodby and walked away. The last thing I wanted to do was leave MY Charlie there alone and afraid, as we both had to wait ten days for his owner to come claim him.

But. ..the never did.

I didn’t know at the time that he was sick…but I’m sure his owners did. Who “looses” a Goldendoodle and never looks for him at the local shelter?! He was picked up as a stray wearing a collar but no tags. Most likely tossed aside and abandoned because he threw up a lot…even though he couldn’t help it.

Ten days later, I returned to that shelter to bring my boy home!

He road in the back of my van, and still looked and smelled every bit as bad as he did the first time I laid eyes on him. He had been neutered, and couldn’t be bathed for another 10 days.

I remember saying to him as we pulled away…” I’m your new dad! I’ve never had a dog before, and I’m a little nervous. I hope I’ll do a good job.”

So, here we are nine years later.

We got divorced, lost my folks, made 65 trip to Penn Veterinary Hospital, met wonderful women who loved dating him more than they did me😉

I thought we were gonna have to say “goodbye” on more than one occasion, but…we’ve gotten through it all, together.

People often say nice things to me about saving Charlie’s life. But I think it’s he who should truly be getting the accolades…for saving mine.

Charlie, Chachi, C-dog, Chaz, Char-man, Charles, fuzz head, Charlie “chicken leg”, muppet man…

My boy!

Charlie

That is one of the best rescue stories I’ve ever read. I tell people all the time they can adopt the breed they want at a rescue.

Thank you Sharon – I knew when i heard David’s story, I had to post it. The letter “R” in this challenge gave me that opportunity.

      What was Charlie sick with?

      • Cathy Bennett
        April 11, 2018

Not really sure, I think Charlie had a series of issues from neglect. But David was able to give him a home full of love, and the right care. Thanks for stopping by, please come back again soon.

Rescue is a great thing if it is right for you at the time. Mom’s last dog was a rescue and she was amazing I hear. Our cats are also rescues, but my sisters and I are from good breeders.

      April 21, 2016

Leo and Jaxson are both from an excellent breeder also. But some people love to rescue. I wanted to let everyone know Goldendoodles are looking to be re-homed too! In the event they were wondering – DRC and IDOG are great organizations to help with that.

My doodle Oliver was a re-home and I guess you could say we took saved each other. Originally I had gone to get his sister as my household was all.female but he wouldn’t leave me alone, if he could talk he’d be saying Pick Me, Pick Me and so I did., on the way home through the Indian reservation he threw up & pooped, I looked at him and said Oliver you’re going to get us killed, he sort of laughed that goofy doodle smile
We got home but there was still.sadness as I had lost my mom and we had moved out to AZ together but Oliver didn’t give me a moment to wall in grief. Doodles look at you and they look into your soul. I almost lost him a year and a half ago and I could not imagine my life without him but my vet pulled him through. I adore all my animals but there is nothing like a doodle and I’m hoping to adopt another one.

Marsha – I can so relate to everything you’ve written, Harley was from a puppy mill, when my mom passed away he was able to keep me sane. All dogs are special, but for me – a Doodle is my choice for a four legged companion. Thanks for stopping by – please come back again soon.

Cathy, I am considering adopting a puppy mill doodle a year old (male) I currently have a Boston Terrier adopted from the Hell of a puppy mill. What will be some issues related to a doodle puppy mill survivor?

Marie – you are talking my language. Harley was a puppy mill disaster. He would certainly have died if I hadn’t come along. He was so infected with a parasite – my vet was amazed and disgusted. I would recommend you look for the obvious – malnutrition, lice, fleas, etc… I would also pay close attention to his personality. Is he easy to scare, skittish, defensive, etc… If possible make arrangements to go straight to a vet you trust. I hope this helps a little. Keep my posted.

What a gorgeous dog 🙂 It annoys me so much when people get dogs without doing any research to see if the dog they chose is suitable for them and then the dog ends up in a shelter!

I agree. I think it’s directly connected to this instant microwave society we’re living in now. Everybody wants what they want immediately, no planning, no though behind the action, just “gimme” What have we created?

      • Callie, Shadow, and Ducky's Mom
        April 23, 2016

Ohmigosh! “Microwave Generation” is the phrase I use. We think alike on soooo many levels! At some point – after Shadow joins Callie in Heaven – I hope to rescue an adult Golden or Doodle to keep Ducky company.

We had a Labradoodle client and his mom just worked a ton of hours and because of his energy and her leaving him for so long, she actually tethered him to a long nylon leash that allowed him all over her main floor of her house but limited his access to leaving the ground floor. We were always so afraid that he’d get hung up on something and hurt himself… Finally, after some time, she realised that he deserved more than what she was able to give him and decided to rehome him. Through Facebook, another client of ours, adopted him and to this day, we still see Murphy, but with his new family and he’s a completely different dog. Such a lovely boy and killer green eyes.

Anyways, I’d love to go find one in a rescue and adopt. I mentioned to my husband the other night that once our two boys pass (lord help me when that happens!!), that I’d be interested in exploring a rescue.

Great topic for the letter R. 😉 xo

There was the most adorable rescue on Pet Finder yesterday. Imagine a face like Harley but the size of Jaxson. He’s 3 years old – out in MD. Man, I wanted to call, and have my kids pick him up for me. Sounds like a terrific doodle, not sure what the rest of his story is, but I can’t afford another dog right now. That’s not to say, I won’t try for three one of these days. Interesting you mentioned “tethering” that’s my letter T for tomorrow – I will talk about training. Have a great weekend! Hugs to your babies from me!

I do appreciate you thinking about me when you found a dog in rescue locally. I so wish I could get another dog, but J said “nope.” I have to admit that four is quite the handful, but I’m convinced that if I can find 4 more ours in the day, I can do it.

Girl, I struggle every day wanting a third. There was one last week looks just like Harley, 3 years old, and Jaxson’s weight. He was so adorable… But I can’t. Lee would run away I’m sure! LOL

I have a beautiful, happy, energetic, healthy white/ tan golden doodle puppy that just turned 7 months. We love her dearly but unfortunately was surprised with an upcoming divorce. Needless to say, we are unable to keep her and would love for Chloe to be in a happy home with children to love her as much as we do. She LOVES to play with other dogs almost as much as she loves to play with people.

Please let me know of there is anything else I can do to help. So sorry…

Where are you located, Tara? I’m in S Florida and all the Doodle rescues seem to be in northern states and only adopt in a small radius. We lost our 15yr old Goldendoodle, also a rescue, 2yr ago and I am finally ready to open my heart to another. Shaggy was such a big part of our family it took a while to get over her loss. We would love to adopt her. I am sorry for the additional pain of a divorce that you are going through.
If she’s already found a home, does anyone know of a rescue near me?

We live in New Jersey. Our Wheaten, Seamus, died 4+ years ago 12 1/2 yrs old. we waited two years and got a Golden Doodle Pup, Angus, from a breeder in upstate New York, Nancy O’Connor. Pup born with Megaesophagus. Another pup in her litter had same. We did not know this. Had to have special chair built for Angus as he had to eat standing up in order for food to go down and not into lungs. He had to be put down at 6 1/2 months of age. Repeated pneumonias. This genetic defect causes them to die of starvation or pneumonia. Our house is missing, a wagging tail, doggie kisses and woofs in our house! It is empty and we would love to rescue a Doodle. IDOG has great dogs, but they are in Texas and prefer local adoptions. I keep looking but so far no luck. We have a house. Fenced in yard. Grown family. We are all dog people. Just looking into your dog’s eyes…I say it is the window to their souls. Such a beautiful experience which I sorely miss.

      May 13, 2018

Hello Rose – I am so so sorry to hear about Angus. I am very familiar with MegaE due to a wonderful person I’ve met years ago. It is my understanding that IDOG rescue is located all over the country. If you do not mind, I will forward your email address (along with this comment) to Kate, she wore closely with IDOG and is possibly the best person I know to steer you in the right direction in regards to adoption. Thanks so much for visiting Groovy Goldendoodles and please come back again soon. I’d love to keep up with your journey.

Three weeks ago I lost my amazing Golden Doodle, Big Doodle, to a tragic car accident.Long horrible story. He was a person in a dog suit. He weighed 85 pounds, but was so calm in the house we barely knew he was around. Yet he was a great athlete outside, especially s soccer. The grief is pretty unbearable. He was only seven. We rescued him from a lady who could no longer keep him. I had never had a large dog before. Fell in love in an hour. We still have two little girls whom we love dearly. But he was a magical crearure. SO special. I work with the homeless community in my town, Clearwater, Florida. The homeless people loved him so much. Everyone loved him so much. He was the only large dog allowed in the small dog area of our dog park! Big Doodle, I miss you so so so much. I would give my right arm to have you bach. He was the glue in our family.
