MYTHS ABOUT GOLDENDOODLES #BLOGGING FROM A-Z

There are a few myths about Goldendoodles that continue to surface …

M

Let’s look at the definition of the word “Myth”

an exaggerated or idealized conception of a person or thing

The most common/confusing myth about Goldendoodles has to be –

ARE THEY HYPOALLERGENIC? –

Because they have the Poodle in their heritage, Goldendoodles are sometimes promoted as being hypoallergenic. But allergies are not caused by a particular dog coat type but by dander, the dead skin cells that are shed by all dogs (and people). VetStreet

HYPOALLERGENIC DOG BREED –

The term is commonly used to refer to a dog breed (or crossbreed) that is more compatible with allergic people than other breeds. However, prominent allergen researchers have claimed that there is no basis to the claims that certain dog breeds are hypoallergenic and, while allergen levels vary among individual dogs, the breed is not a significant factor. Wiki

THE MYTH –

Though some studies suggest the possible existence of hypoallergenic dog breeds, there is too much variability to conclude that such a breed exists.

The significant allergens are proteins found in the dog’s saliva and dander. Some studies have suggested that the production of the allergen, and therefore human allergenic reaction, varies by breed, yet more recent scientific findings indicate that there are no significant differences between breeds in the generation of these allergens. Wiki

SCIENTIFIC FINDINGS –

Breeds that shed less are more likely to be hypoallergenic, since the dog’s dander and saliva stick to the hair and are not released into the environment.

All dogs shed, and all dogs produce dander and saliva in some degree.Wiki

My personal experience comes from observing the Boys with our VA neighbors…

Marshall has allergies. When he played with other dogs, he would generally suffer for hours afterwards with allergy symptoms. Marshall is able to play all day long with Harley and Jaxson with no allergy issues providing the dogs don’t lick his face…

DSCN5287 Marshall now has his own Goldendoodle – and the same rule applies. As long as Finley doesn’t lick his face, he doesn’t have allergic reactions.

Poodles have a reputation for being hypoallergenic, meaning that they can supposedly be tolerated by people who have allergies to dogs. Because they have the Poodle in their heritage, Goldendoodles are sometimes promoted as being hypoallergenic. But allergies are not caused by a particular dog coat type but by dander, the dead skin cells that are shed by all dogs (and people). There is no scientific evidence that any breed or cross breed is more or less allergenic than any other dog. Some people with mild allergies react less severely to particular dogs, but no reputable breeder will guarantee that her dogs are hypoallergenic. VetStreet

WORDS TO REMEMBER –

Although not all Goldendoodles exhibit the non-shedding coat type of the standard poodle, most of them do have a low to non-shedding coat. While some breeders claim that the goldendoodle is a hypoallergenic dog, no studies have proven that any canine is completely hypoallergenic. Wiki

My sister Katie sheds like a fool all the time, but her fur is different from other furs and is also more hypoallergenic than most dogs. Allergies are a rotten thing to have.

I’ve seen some folks with bad allergies who love dogs and they suffer through it – it’s the worst. I feel so bad for them. Speaking of Katie – how’s she doing Emma? Have a good weekend friend…

Very interesting! Luckily that is something I have not had to worry about!
