The inherited intelligence of the Goldendoodle, their eagerness to please combined with their love of learning make them irresistible.
I’m sure I am not the only one who believes her dogs are furry little geniuses – that’s part of our job as pet parents.
HOWEVER –
In the category of dogs bred for jobs that require decision making and concentration, Goldendoodles will astound you with how quickly they can learn.
Harley is that type of dog…
Regularly I am impressed with his ability to reason, disseminate and execute an instructed task. He observes a great deal and will mimic behavior.
Hence – pet therapy. Harley is an incredible pet therapy dog. To watch him with people who suffer either physically or mentally is nothing short of phenominal…
In addition to the fluff, friendliness and low shedding coat, the intelligence of the Goldendoodle attracts many people. Most are already familiar with the two chosen breeds as parents.
The Golden Retriever is –
- devoted
- friendly
- intelligent
The Poodle is –
- active
- proud
- very smart
While these characteristics make for a quick learner, it also creates a dog who – at whim – can become both stubborn and hard headed. #betterbelieveit
If Goldendoodles don’t get the mental stimulation they need, they’ll make their own work – usually with projects you won’t like, such as digging and chewing.
Although Harley has never been destructive, Jaxson on the other hand could be – if allowed.
Jaxson requires toys, Harley prefers tasks. They both thrive on training. They would train willingly all day. I am the problem.
I recognize I should teach and train much more than I do. #workingonthat
I honestly believe I haven’t begun to tap into all that they can master.
*I am not a breeder nor a veterinarian. I am a Doodle Mom searching and sharing a better understanding about everything Goldendoodle.

I know how stubborn Callie and Shadow could be/are; and how incredibly smart Kissy was; so I can well imagine you have your hands ful with your boys. But their unconditional love, loyalty, and devotion to us make all the work worthwhile. 🙂

Oh, I wouldn’t have it any other way, I love having them in my life (as do you!).

As the owner of several standard poodles over the years, I can attest to the intelligence of the breed. Then Exhibit A (aka Sam) showed up and we had to threw out all the previous evidence. Sounds like you got both smarts and the sweetness in your two to make life interesting and rewarding. I just got sweet but wouldn’t trade him for anything. 🙂

With Leo, I had sweet and shy. He was super shy when meeting new people, but he was so loving, you just waited patiently for him to warm up to you. I love the individual styles they all have, Sam included! Have a great week.

Sometimes they are TOO intelligent for their own good. Penny is a prime example, BOL

I know Nicole, there are times when Harley looks at me and I really think he’s talking to me with his eyes. #superscary LOL

Love the word Irresistible!!!! They are absolutely. I am missing my two so much it actually does hurt. But they are being very good for my sister and there is so much happening at my house and in my calendar that I know it was the right decision. Harley is like my Dash — and so connected it makes it so fun to watch him!! (and to watch Lilly and Jax of course!!) Great post.

I can only imagine how lonely you must be Deirdre. How much longer will you three have to be separated? The reunion is going to be something special, make sure you video tape it. Hang in there girlfriend, it won’t last forever….

We are an intelligent breed too, but we do things our way, preferably and prefer not to always listen and follow what our mom tells us. She is stubborn and independent too, so we all understand each other.

Sounds like everyone in your house is meant for one another Emma! That’s the best 🙂

Sounds like a Goldendoodle would be a great fit for our family. We have loads of chew toys in the house for our dogs. What I’ve found is that I’m constantly on alert for energy changes in our pack – I’m used to it now and rarely get caught off guard. If our dogs aren’t occupied or well exercised, then I’m going to have naughty dogs.
I’ve started grabbing a handful of training treats and working with them several days a week. It’s fun seeing them come along and they’re so much happier for it.

I’m finding I do better training Jax once he’s had about 30 minutes running around, playing fetch and jumping through a child’s hola hoop. He really likes it – and we’re getting pretty good at it too. I use training treats when I’m introducing something new, after that I give “high praise” Yes – I think you would adore having a Doodle in your house!

Beautiful pics 🙂 Great info on Golden Retrievers and Poodles. I just love how each dog has their own personality – not one of my three Rottweiler boys are the same, yet they all share the same intelligence, love of life and sense of loyalty 🙂 Good luck with the rest of the AtoZchallenge.

Thank you so much! Rottweiler’s have such gorgeous markings. I was fascinated the first time I met one. Feel free to come back often and hangout with us 🙂

He really is a giant Quincey (my mom’s bichon that was I telling you about). 🙂
I think Charlie would’ve made a phenomenal therapy dog, but he’s too kissy and that’s a no-no for the therapy dogs here.
I just want to bury my face in their fur 🙂 🙂

Harley is a kisser too, but not when he’s working. Although people will bend down and ask for a kiss before I can stop them LOL I’ve got the flu this week, and Harley has spent the entire time up on me wherever I sit. I just rub his back and it feels so good. This week he’s been my therapy dog!
